#GoGIRL Hamdia Ahmed is First Miss Maine Competitor to Wear a Hijab
Sometimes, it's sad to me that in 2017, women are still making "firsts." But nevertheless, I'll forever be glad these firsts are being made. The Miss Maine competition just had their first contestant to wear a hijab. Hamdia Ahmed tweeted She tweeted: “I competed in Miss Maine as the first Muslim girl with a Hijab. I slayed my hijab.” In another tweet, she thanked online shopping company Modanisa.com for her burkini, saying "I was able to meet my modest needs."
While this is a first for the Miss Maine competition, the appearance of the hijab isn't exactly novel. Last November, Halima Aden wore a hijab in the Miss Minnesota competition, and went onto become a celebrated high-fashion model. Later, Muna Jama made history by refusing to wear a bikini during the swimsuit portion of the Miss Universe competition, opting to don a kaftan instead. (Teen Vogue)
Beauty comes in all forms, and it's far beyond time we celebrated all of them. Hamdia says she slayed her hijab; honey you slayed the entire competition. #YouGoGIRL
